ISLAHIYE (TURKEY): UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon called on the international community and the UN Security Council on Friday to unite and take decisive action to end the conflict in Syria, saying only a political solution could end the violence.

"I urge the international community, and in particular the Security Council, to stand united and act decisively to end the crisis," Ban said after visiting a refugee camp in Turkey.

"The military path is a dead end. It only fills the streets with more blood, it only fills camps like this with more tears."

'Chemical weapons'

Earlier, Ban said he was not aware of any confirmed reports that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was preparing to use chemical weapons but that if he did so it would be an "outrageous crime" with "huge consequences".

"Recently we have been receiving alarming news that the Syrian government may be preparing to use chemical weapons. We have no confirmed reports on this matter," Ban said after visiting a Syrian refugee camp in Turkey.

"However, if it is the case, then it will be an outrageous crime in the name of humanity."
