ISLAMABAD: A US drone strike killed a top Pakistani militant commander Mullah Nazir along with his two aides and five fighters in the country's northwestern tribal region of South Waziristan, security officials said on Thursday.

According to intelligence officials, two missiles targeted Nazir's vehicle on Wednesday night at 10.30pm in the Sar Kanda area of South Waziristan Agency. He was traveling from Birmal town to Wana, the agency's headquarters, a local intelligence official said. "His vehicle was hit by missile at Sar Kanda area. Mullah Nazir and his two influential deputies, Attaullah and Rafay Khan, were killed in the strike," the official confirmed.

The death of Nazir, a pro-Pakistan and anti-US militant commander, was seen by observers as a big blow to Taliban insurgency across the border. Noor Rehman Sherzad, a veteran Afghan journalist, told TOI via phone that Nazir had entirely focused on war in Afghanistan and his fighters were constantly attacking US and allied forces there from Pakistan's tribal badlands. "Nazir also enjoyed a lot of influence in southwestern Afghan provinces of Paktia, Paktika, Zabul and Helmand for keeping the Taliban insurgency alive there," Sherzad said.

In his mid-30s, Nazir, was the top militant commander and leader of the Ahmedzai Wazir tribe in South Waziristan. Unlike other Pakistani Taliban factions, he was against attacks on Pakistani military and government installations. In 2007, he had entered into peace agreement with the Pakistani military along with Hafiz Gul Bahadur, another pro-Pakistan militant commander based in North Waziristan tribal region. Both commanders were known as good Taliban among the country's military strategists. Nazir had survived two earlier drone strikes.

In November, he was injured in suicide attack, which was blamed on Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistani (TTP). Following the suicide attack, he expelled families of rival Mehsud tribesmen from main towns of South Waziristan controlled by his fighters. In 2009, Pakistan's army carried out a military offensive in remote parts of South Waziristan against the TTP. The areas controlled by Maulvi Nazir had been relatively calm and peaceful. However, several defense analysts said that Nazir's death has upset the balance that the military had built in the tribal areas to avert and counter the TTP threat. His death, observers fear, could lead to increase in violence.

"If Nazir's and Hafiz Gul Bahadur's fighters join hands with the TTP in the wake of former's killing, the situation will get difficult for the military struggling against the homegrown militants in the tribal areas," said Asad Munir, a retired brigadier and former member of the Inter Services Intelligence. Nazir's support in the past helped the military in expulsion of Uzbek militants from the region.

In a separate drone strike in North Waziristan on Thursday morning, at least four people were and several others injured, officials said.
