Spokesman of Nepal Police said that he has been identified as Thondup Dupche but nothing else about him is known because police have not been able to get in touch with his relatives.
The burning was the 100th known incident since a wave of self-immolation bids by Tibetans started in 2009 to protest against Chinese rule in Tibet.
Reports in the local media have said that he came from India but Adhikari refused to confirm this saying investigations are still ongoing.
Executive director of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment, Dr. Bhagwan Koirala said, "The death was expected. Some 95% of his body was burnt."
According to the police, he had gone inside a toilet of a restaurant in front of the Boudhanath, the most religious Tibetan Buddhism shrine on Tuesday morning about 8:30am, doused himself in petrol and then come out and set himself on fire.
Police rushed to his rescue within a few minutes and took him to hospital where he was undergoing treatment.
