Elections on four seats, however, could not take place as government issued a presidential order changing election procedure for members from tribal regions hours before polling. The move made senate polls, already marred by controversies and allegations of horse-trading, more controversial.
The polling process remained normal in all legislatures except in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) where voting was suspended for more than five hours, after opposition members pointed out violations in the elections code of conduct by members of treasury benches from Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf. The voting, however, resumed in KP assembly late on Thursday evening and continued until 11 pm.
According to unofficial results, the PML-N has won the highest number of seats with 18 out of the 48, followed by PPP which won eight, six by the PTI and four by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
Despite winning most of the seats, the PML-N will remain a minority government in the Senate with 26 senators as the PPP has maintained its position as the single largest party with 27 senators. This means that the race for the coveted slots of chairman and deputy chairman will be hotly contested and the role of smaller parties cannot be underestimated.
Elections for upper house of parliament are held after every three years for one half of the Senate and each Senator has a term of six years.
